Computer networks, connections and protocols

2 subtopics

This topic covers what a network is, the difference between a LAN and a WAN, and the factors that affect network performance. You need the roles in a client server setup and in a peer to peer one, plus star and mesh topologies.

The second subtopic is about how devices connect and talk. Wired against wireless, encryption, IP and MAC addressing, and the standards and protocols: TCP/IP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, POP, IMAP and SMTP.

Layers tend to catch people out. You need to know what layering means and why networks are built in layers, rather than memorising a particular model's diagram.
